FIRST LEGO League

The School of ICT hosted the annual FIRST LEGO League on 12 and 13 October 2018 at the Nelson Mandela University, New Engineering Building, with over 10 teams participating. Every year, FIRST LEGO League releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic, this year we are going INTO ORBIT (SM).
SAICSIT 2018

The School of ICT had the honour of hosting the 2018 Annual Conference of the South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists (SAICSIT). The conference took place at the Boardwalk Hotel, Convention Center and Spa from 26 - 28 September 2018. On the 26th SAICSIT hosted a symposium for Masters and Doctoral students; with the main conference taking place on 27 - 28 September 2018.
Congratulations to Rahul Maharaj and Wiehan Janse van Rensburg, who recently presented two research papers at the HAISA 2018 conference.
 
Centre for Community Technologies (CCT) Director at Nelson Mandela University, Prof Darelle van Greunen, recently attended the installation of Glasgow Caledonian University’s new Chancellor, singer, songwriter, political activist and philanthropist, Annie Lennox. 

Professor Darelle van Greunen, the Director of the Centre for Community Technologies at Nelson Mandela University, has received an Honorary Professorship from Amity University (India).

Congratulations to Vuyolwethu Mdunyelwa and Karen Church on being award recipients at the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA) Eastern Cape Awards Ceremony, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel on 23 May 2018.

The month of April saw many School of ICT staff members and students getting capped and finally having a qualification under their belt. A marvelous achievement for all who walked across the stage.

Congratulations to our School Secretary, Mrs Farren Foutie, on being the recipient of the PASS Excellence Awards 2017 in her category. 

Prof Darelle van Greunen, Director of the Centre for Community Technologies at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, won a R1 million Discovery Foundation Rural Fellowship at the awards ceremony recently. It will boost her development of a mobile application aimed at reducing high drug-resistant TB burden in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

Learners in Nelson Mandela Bay will again be exposed to the excitement and benefits of science and technology when Nelson Mandela University’s School of Information Communication Technology hosts a regional qualifying tournament for the First Lego League (FLL) challenge.

South African academics have been called upon to play a more active role in the country’s major decision making structures so as to use their research to make a meaningful impact in the development of the country.

This was the bold call by renowned actor and creative Dr John Kani, while delivering the keynote address at Nelson Mandela University's prestigious Research, Teaching and Engagement Excellence Awards last night.

The School of ICT has a identified a serious need among visaully-impaired students for assistance with computer skills.

Albert Sande Jumba and Lab Assistant Ahmed Amin Ahmed presented the training material with a high level of knowledge of hacking concepts.

THE new mHealth4Afrika (Mobile Health for Africa) project is the only Horizon 2020 project awarded to SA out of seven submissions from the country, recognition of its potential.

As we continue our drive to professionalism in ICT, the Institute wishes to congratulate our new professional members and welcome them to the ranks of members holding the IP3 accredited and SAQA registered professional designation PMIITPSA.
